When you enter CWNU’s front gate, you can see a red and white placard. It says, “The university President must stop his dogmatic and irresponsible actions.” The sign was placed there by faculty staff, the university senate, and various labor unions. A short time ago, they issued a joint statement, explaining why they can no longer endure a President who ignores the university senate’s deliberations, decisions, and school regulations. Instead, the President repeatedly pushes forward his dogmatic and irresponsible university management policies.

The university senate, that is comprised of professors, employees and student representatives, deliberated over a school budget for over four hours. The university senate unanimously voted to cut about a hundred million won from the chair-professor’s wage. For the last two years, two hundred million won was expended on the chair-professor’s wage, but during his tenure in office, he was also appointed as principal of Seoul Arts High School. This goes against regulations concerning visiting professors.

However, the university President tried to re-commission the chair-professor. He insisted upon re-commission due to public relations. If a university president does not agree with a university senate’s decision, he can request re-deliberation. But the president ignored the re-deliberation process. Instead, in March, 2014, he appointed the chair-professor as a professor.

The university senate’s unanimous decision was completely ignored by the president. Last July, the university senate also rejected a proposal regarding the mechatronics department, which was pushed forward anyways. The faculty is angry. The senate’s members can no longer stand by idly. They are demanding that the President respect the university senate’s decisions. The university is not the President’s own private possession. The President needs to manage affairs responsibly, and listen to others’ opinions.
