Retracing Her First Step

Interview with Ahn Seon-hwa (11), Dept. of Nano & Advanced Materials Engineering

Did you know that the 7 successful female ROTC (Reserve Officers¡¯ Training Corps) applicants all came from Gyeongsangnam-do? And two of the 7 are our own CWNU students. Isn¡¯t it amazing and awesome? I think they have to have high self-esteem. I interviewed one of the two successful candidates.

Q : Can I ask you to introduce yourself briefly?
A : I¡¯m Ahn Seon-hwa, a sophomore in the Dept. of Nano & Advanced Materials Engineering. And this year I¡¯m part of the 53rd ROTC Cadet program. I¡¯m a member of Phoenix, which is a cheerleading team.

Q : What kind of efforts did you make to be in the ROTC?
A : I think it was a hard strain to prepare for all the exams with crack rivals, wasn¡¯t it? I practiced sit-ups, long-distance running, push-ups and so on every day since autumn of last year to improve my strength score since.
Of course, there was too much impressive competition, but I didn¡¯t worry about them. It is because I wasn¡¯t too bothered about them that I was able to do my best. And there were two more examinations, a written test and interview.
I completed 3 workbooks for the written test and studied Korean history, though I didn¡¯t study it when I was a high school student. I asked my seniors in the reserve forces a lot of questions about the army to prepare for the interview, and practiced the interview with my friends face to face.

Q : Could you tell me your aspiration as CWNU¡¯s first woman ROTC?
A : There is an saying that a woman soldier equates to a fish in a fishbowl. Everyone can observe me and my every movement can receive attention. So, I will be prudent in my conduct and attitude of mind. And as the first, I
will make zealous efforts not to do injury to the name of the women ROTC, with self-respect, pride and a sense of duty.

Q : You are ¡°The FIRST female ROTC in our university.¡± What do you think about the importance of this title?
A : It is good that I can establish a high standard because there is no pressure to do better than another. It makes me more active.
The bad side is that the attention of strangers is too much.

Q : What is motive that made you join ROTC?
A : My friends, teachers and people around me advised me to be a soldier when I was young. I also have thought about this dream and wanted to seize bigger opportunities. And because my parents believed in my choice and gave me support, I could trust my decision.

Q : Say what you want to say to your juniors that prepare for ROTC?
A : The most important thing is your will to do it. At first, you will be disappointed by your record in preparing for the physical test. But never give up. You should know that the more you practice, the better your record will become. Try to be optimistic all the time.
