Hacking originated from the word ‘hack’ which means to assemble more quickly an electric train, track and switch.
The first hacker train modeling club was formed in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1960s. Some members of the club took an interest in the university computer system and studied it. They called themselves “Hacker”.
Hacking began by fabricating a phone that enables no charge calls. Taking this opportunity, computer hacking began. From then on, cracking began by sharding computer password and credit card information. As mentioned earlier, cracking is the abuse of hacking. So to speak, cracking causes psychological and physical damage to individuals and serious damage to computer systems. Trespassing a system by force for individual or organization’s benefit is considered cracking, and is illegal.
For example, hackers use cracking if they need a competitor’s important and confidential information. Then they store virus or break that computer in order to not leave their trace.
This year, there was a computer network breakdown in National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (Nonghyup). This was not a temporary setback but a big problem that lasted for a few days.
The real cause of Nonghyup’s network breakdown is cracking. But many people think it is hacking, not cracking. In the future, we should know and use the correct term.
