Kazakhstan Government Offering Scholarships to Korean Exchange Students

Amid a decrease in overseas exchange program activities due to COVID-19, the International Exchange Education Center is currently selecting scholarship students invited by the Kazakhstan government from 2021-2022. The government-invited scholarship system is designed to promote international educational exchanges and promote friendship among countries by giving foreign students the opportunity to study at higher education institutions in Korea. Kazakhstan is continuing government scholarship programs with Korean universities and has begun recruiting Korean students to study in Kazakhstan with scholarships for 2021-2022.

The selection of the 2021-2022 scholarship programs is open to Korean bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and doctorate students. Eligibility for application requires at least a ‘B’ average for bachelor’s, and the master’s and doctorate courses should have an average score of at least 3.3 points or an equivalent score from educational institutions. Applicants should also have Korean citizenship. The scholarship includes tuition and monthly finances. The national university’s bachelor’s degree is 920,300 tenge per student, and 26,186 tenge per month for students studying in the field of education at educational institutions. Master’s degree students receive and 646,300 tenge per year for tuition, 66,913 tenge for monthly finances. PhD students receive 1.9 million tenge per year for tuition, and 150,000 for monthly finances.

Submitted documents must be translated into Russian or English. Submissions from applicants who want to study in Kazakhstan’s educational institutions must include a copy of their passports, notarized documents showing their academic history, and medical certificates of the applicants. They should also submit a police clearance certification. Applications are submitted with simple personal information, the previously mentioned documents, language level certificate, and the student’s motivation for application. All applications must be scanned in PDF format and submitted by e-mail to a.bulekbaeva@edu.gov.kz. The deadline for applications is June 20, 2021, and inquiries can be made via the above email.

Korea is also supporting many scholarships, including the Global Korea Scholarship. Global Korean scholarships include studying abroad, state-funded training, and the Korean government-invited scholarship system. State-funded study abroad is national scholarship system that supports Korean citizens with studying abroad, and aims to promote the internationalization of education and academic research. State training is a system that provides overseas training to Korean people with state funds. It has different selection rules, qualifications for applications, and required documents than for studying abroad. The Korean Government Scholarship Program is a scholarship program for foreigners to study in South Korea. It is different from the Korean government’s state-funded study abroad program, which supports Koreans studying abroad. There are more than 20 countries where Koreans can apply as government scholarship students. Many countries are providing scholarships to international students, including the Fulbright Scholarship in the U.S., Japan’s joint exchange project for high education students in Korea and Japan, and Britain’s Chevening Scholarship.

More information on Kazakhstan’s government-invited scholarship students can be found at Changwon University’s International Exchange Education Center, while more details can be found at the National Institute of International Exchange on various other scholarships. The opportunity to study abroad has been greatly reduced due to COVID-19. It’s hoped that many students will be interested in these programs and will find this information helpful to apply to study abroad.
