Enrolling in Courses: Is it a Student's Right?
The first week of March is the busiest week for all students because it is enrollment time for spring semester. The nerves of each department offices¡¯ assistants are on edge like the students'. As students are promoted to the next grade, they have difficulties in signing up for courses for various reasons. There are many cases where students come into conflict with assistants or professors who do not want to increase the number of people in their classes. Let¡¯s meet two people who have some opinions about this problem.

Cheon Jeong-woo ('09), Department of Public Administration

It has become a hard thing to enroll in classes since I became a sophomore. Moreover, since I am in a course in teaching education, there are many cases in which I have to visit other department offices and ask them to allow me to take classes. On some occasions, I have felt that I was begging assistants for courses even though I am a student of this university who pays tuition. It is a very strange phenomenon that assistants wield such a strong influence over course registration. It is clearly the right of students to enroll, but it does not go in the right direction for students. Who is this course registration system meant to serve? Is it for assistants, or is it for professors? No, it is for students. Everyone should know this. I wish there were no more difficulties for students regarding registration for any reason.

Kim E-seul ('09), Department of Accounting

I am doing a double major with the Department of English Language & Literature. I have much to say about this problem. First, although double major students like me cannot help taking required subjects for lower year classes, we cannot take those classes because they are limited to first and second year students. So, we have to wait until the limitation is lifted or visit professors and department offices. Next, since we cannot preview the lecture evaluation, we can never select classes of good quality by ourselves. Third, the number of enrollees is too small even if it is a compulsory subject. Finally, though the elective subjects are essential for graduation, there are a very limited number of courses. This should be improved for double major students. It is everyone¡¯s problem.
