A post by a hairstylist on an online community gained attention. The post describes an elderly customer who apologized for not making a reservation and asked if they could get a haircut. They welcomed the customer, sharing their feelings on the post. Seeing the elderly person repeatedly being turned away from other shops due to a lack of having a reservation, the hairstylist expressed hope for a more compassionate society towards them.

South Korea has achieved rapid technological growth. By shifting from cumbersome analog methods to convenient digital systems, people can now obtain what they need quickly and easily. However, some individuals are still unfamiliar with digital technology. In particular, the middle-aged and the elderly, who are not accustomed to using the internet in daily life, are being left behind in the, "based on reservation," mentality.

Noh Hyun-cheol (63) and Lee Yong-yoon (71) expressed their frustration with society. Mr. Noh shared his experience of trying to book a train ticket to visit his son in Seoul during the Lunar New Year holiday. However, all seats were already sold out through the online reservation system, leaving him unable to attend. “After that incident, my son booked the tickets for me.” he said. “For those who are not familiar with the internet, even taking a train or a bus is difficult.”

According to a report released by KORAIL in January, during last year's holiday period, one in every 12 to 13 persons aged 70 and over purchased tickets offline at the train station. The offline purchase rate for the elderly is about 15 times higher compared to teenagers. In response, KORAIL initiated phone reservations for individuals who find it difficult to use the internet, however, only 20% of the total seats were available for reservation through this method, causing stark competition.

Ms. Lee shared her experience of being turned away when she and her husband visited a restaurant without a reservation. The staff told her, "The vacant seats are already reserved," and suggested, "If you make a reservation through the portal site, tomorrow will be available." She felt disheartened by the response. The staff added, "Popular restaurants can be difficult to reach by phone, so it's best to make reservations online." Ms. Lee expressed, "I'm afraid to go out and eat due to the possibility of rejection."

Online reservations are primarily made through internet sites or apps. For restaurants, customers select the date and number of people when making a reservation. In some cases, they may also choose their menu in advance. However, the small text on mobile screens and the complex steps pose a significant barrier for the elderly. Ms. Lee said, "The reservation page has many steps and the details are so thorough that it looks like a test."

Both Mr. Noh and Ms. Lee said, "Online reservations would only be possible if someone helps." Mr. Noh expressed frustration, saying, "If I didn't have a son, I wouldn't even think about making an online reservation. Asking for help every time can sometimes feel awkward." Ms. Lee said, "The line at the bus terminal was so long that the staff suggested using a kiosk, but I didn't know how to use it. I stood there until a lady helped me, and then I was finally able to make the purchase." She added, "It would be great if there were assistants next to the machines."

In this reality, there are growing calls for national attention and support. Seok Jae-eun, professor of the department of social welfare at Hallym University pointed out, "The advancement of digital technology is positive, and it cannot be stopped, however, we need to be sensitive to the needs and convenience of the elderly." For Korea, which is facing an aging society, what is crucial is not just complex technological advancements, but the adaptation of user-friendly technology that can be easily accessed by all generations.

No one should be excluded from the experience of "living." Everyone should have equal access to technology, enjoying the benefits of progress. We must recognize that technological growth without consideration can become a form of abuse to some, leading to societal exclusion. An inclusive society requires acts of consideration, like invoking change when required. What if the students of CWNU focused on narrowing the digital divide and joined efforts in creating a more compassionate and inclusive society?
