In this article, we delve into the transformative journeys of two students who participated in the exchange program, exploring their firsthand experiences. Additionally, we aim to highlight the strengths and potential of CWNU’s exchange student program.

이번 기사에서는 교환학생 프로그램에 참여한 두 학생의 생생한 경험을 통해 그들의 변화를 살펴보고, 국립창원대학교 교환학생 프로그램의 강점과 가능성에 대해 탐구해 보고자 한다.

A Russian Exchange Student Immersed in K- culture: Nabiullina Diana

한국 문화에 푹 빠진 러시아 교환학생, 나비울리나 디아나

“Korea feels like my second home now.” Nabiullina Diana (21) from Russia decided to come to Korea, captivated by the allure of K- culture. “Learning Korean wasn’t easy at first, but I gradually found it fascinating. I’m majoring in Korean and English translation studies, and I joined the exchange student program to further enhance my speaking and listening skills,” Diana shared.

“한국은 이제 제2의 고향 같아요.” 러시아 출신 나비울리나 디아나(21) 학생은 K- 컬쳐에 매료되어 한국행을 결심했다. “처음에는 한국어 공부가 쉽지 않았지만, 점차 흥미를 느끼게 되었어요. 한국어와 영어 번역학을 전공하는데, 말하기와 듣기 능력을 더욱 향상시키고자 교환학생 프로그램을 선택했습니다”라고 디아나는 말했다.

Her academic and campus life at CWNU exceeded her expectations. “Compared to my home university, CWNU offers a much more comfortable and positive learning environment. The kindness of the people here and the passion of the professors keep me motivated every day,” she remarked.

국립창원대학교에서의 학업과 생활은 그녀의 기대를 뛰어넘었다. “제 고향 대학과 비교했을 때, 국립창원대학교는 훨씬 더 편안하고 긍정적인 학습 환경을 제공해요. 친절한 사람들과 열정적인 교수님들 덕분에 매일 동기 부여를 받습니다.”

The most memorable aspect of her exchange experience was meeting friends from diverse backgrounds. “My friends made my time as an exchange student even more meaningful by helping me adjust to Korean culture and daily life,” Diana shared. For her, the language barrier was both the greatest challenge and assignment. However, she gradually overcame it through consistent efforts to communicate and a fearless attitude toward making mistakes.

교환학생 생활 중 가장 기억에 남는 순간으로는 다양한 국적을 가진 친구들과의 만남을 꼽았다. “친구들이 한국 문화와 생활에 적응하도록 도와주었기에 교환학생 생활이 더욱 의미 있었습니다.” 디아나에게 언어 장벽은 가장 큰 도전이자 과제였지만, 꾸준한 대화 시도와 실수를 두려워하지 않는 태도로 점차 극복해나갔다고 한다.

Through this experience, Diana gained a deeper understanding of Korean culture and underwent significant changes in her perspective. “Experiencing a tangerine farm and haenyeo culture in Jeju allowed me to feel the diversity of Korea, which greatly influenced my values.” She said that her exchange experience confirmed her desire to further study the Korean language and culture.

이번 경험을 통해 디아나는 한국 문화를 깊이 이해하며 사고방식에 많은 변화를 겪었다고 전했다. “제주도에서의 귤 농장 체험과 해녀 문화를 접하며 한국의 다양성을 느낄 수 있었어요. 이러한 경험은 단순한 문화적 이해를 넘어 저의 가치관을 넓히는 데 큰 영향을 주었습니다.” 디아나는 교환학생 경험을 통해 한국어와 한국 문화에 대해 더 깊이 배우고 싶다는 확신을 가졌다.

Diana also thought about how she would share her exchange student experience with those back home. “When I return, I want to share my diverse experiences in Korea with many people. I’d like to talk about the challenges faced during exchange student life, how I overcame them, and share tips to make life abroad more enjoyable. Of course, I can’t forget to mention the beautiful campus of CWNU and the kind professors,” she said, proudly expressing her desire to share these precious memories.

디아나는 본국으로 돌아가면 주변인들에게 교환학생 경험을 어떻게 소개할지에 대해서도 생각해보았다. “귀국하면 한국에서의 다양한 경험을 많은 사람들과 나누고 싶어요. 교환학생 생활에서 겪을 수 있는 어려움과 그것을 극복하는 방법, 그리고 해외에서의 생활을 더욱 즐겁게 만드는 팁들을 공유하고 싶어요. 특히 국립창원대의 아름다운 캠퍼스와 친절한 교수님들에 대한 이야기도 빼놓을 수 없죠”라며 이 곳에서의 소중한 추억들을 자랑스럽게 이야기할 것이라고 말했다.

Broadening Global Perspectives: Seong Ju-won, Dept. of Robot, Control & Instrumentation Engineering, on Exchange Experience in Germany

독일 교환학생 경험으로 글로벌 시각을 넓힌 로봇제어공학과 성주원 학생

“Even if new challenges seem daunting, they become valuable experiences.” This time, we explore the story of a CWNU students’ exchange journey abroad. Seong Ju-won, majoring in Robot, Control & Instrumentation, experienced significant academic and personal growth during his exchange program in Germany. He shared his motivation for joining the exchange program: “As graduation approached, I wanted to reflect deeply on my life.” Having set participating in an exchange program as a bucket list goal since high school, he seized this final opportunity before graduation to head to Germany. “I wanted to share life stories with people from different countries and redefine my own. I believed this experience would have a profound impact on my future,” he explained.

"새로운 도전이 두렵더라도 그 자체로 소중한 경험이 될 거예요." 이번에는 우리 대학 학생이 타지에서 경험한 교환학생 이야기이다. 국립창원대학교 로봇제어공학과에 재학 중인 4학년 성주원 학생은 독일에서의 교환학생 경험을 통해 학문적, 개인적으로 한층 성장했다. 주원 학생은 교환학생 프로그램에 참여하게 된 계기로 "졸업을 앞두고 제 삶에 대해 진지하게 돌아보고 싶었습니다"라고 밝혔다. 고등학교 시절부터 교환학생 프로그램을 버킷리스트로 설정해두었던 그는 졸업 전 마지막 기회를 놓치지 않고 독일행을 선택했다. "다른 나라 사람들과 그들 삶의 이야기를 나누며 제 삶을 재정립하고 싶었어요. 그 경험이 제 미래에 중요한 영향을 미칠 것이라 생각했습니다."

However, preparing for the exchange student process wasn’t easy. He struggled with complex visa procedures and paperwork, especially when his German university was closed for Christmas. “I called a professor and managed to get the required document three days before the deadline,” he said, recalling the challenging process.

하지만 교환학생 준비 과정은 순탄치 않았다. 주원 학생은 비자 발급을 위한 복잡한 절차와 서류 준비에서 어려움을 겪었다. 특히 크리스마스 시즌에 독일 대학에서 입학 증명서를 받아야 했으나, 학교 운영이 중단된 상황이었다. "급하게 독일 교수님께 전화를 걸어 영어로 간곡히 부탁드렸고, 다행히 마감 3일 전에 서류를 받을 수 있었어요. 어려운 과정이었지만, 결과적으로는 비자를 무사히 받았습니다"라고 당시 상황을 설명했다.

The learning environment in Germany was quite different from Korea. It emphasized students’ autonomy and responsibility, requiring self- motivation and active participation. “In Korea, attending university and classes often feels mandatory, but in Germany, the attitude was more like, ‘Only those who want to study should do so,’” he shared.

독일의 학습 환경은 한국과 사뭇 달랐다. 학교에 대한 학생들의 자율성과 책임감이 강조되어 스스로 동기를 부여하고 학업에 참여해야 하는 환경이었다. “한국에서는 대학 진학이 필수적이고 수업 참여가 의무적인 경우가 많지만, 독일에서는 '공부할 사람만 하라'는 분위기였어요."

Most of all, the toughest challenge was the language barrier. In a master’s- level, engineering project, he struggled to keep up. “I realized it wasn’t their accents but my listening skills, so I studied English for over five hours daily.” By the second semester, he completed presentations and exams successfully, feeling proud of his progress.

무엇보다도 교환학생 생활 중 가장 힘든 점은 언어 장벽이었다. 특히, 전기공학 석사 과정의 팀 프로젝트에서는 언어 문제로 수업 내용을 이해하는 데 어려움을 겪었다. "유럽 학생들은 자연스럽게 수업 내용을 따라갔지만, 저는 언어 장벽 때문에 힘들었어요. '다른 학생들의 발음 문제가 아니라 내 듣기 실력이 문제구나'라고 깨닫고, 매일 5시간 이상 영어 공부에 매진했습니다. 노력 덕분에 두 번째 학기에는 발표와 시험을 무사히 마칠 수 있었고, 제 자신에게 자부심을 느꼈습니다.”

Seong shared that his exchange experience had a significant impact on his future and major. “It broadened my interests beyond my field of study and taught me the importance of doing my best wherever I am. With the experiences I gained abroad, I feel ready to face any challenge with a positive attitude.”

주원 학생은 교환학생 경험이 자신의 미래와 전공에 중요한 영향을 미쳤다고 말한다. "교환학생을 통해 전공 외에도 다양한 분야에 대한 관심을 가지게 되었고, 무엇보다 자기 자리에서 최선을 다하는 것이 중요하다는 것을 깨달았어요. 해외에서 얻은 경험을 바탕으로 앞으로 어떤 도전이든 긍정적인 자세로 임할 수 있을 것 같습니다."

He advised students considering an exchange program: “Don’t be afraid of new challenges. Take initiative and be proud of your choices.” He emphasized that the exchange experience is not just about going abroad but a valuable opportunity for self- reflection and growth.

주원 학생은 교환학생 프로그램을 고민 중인 학생들에게 "새로운 도전을 두려워하지 마세요. 주체적으로 행동하고, 당신이 내린 선택에 자부심을 가지세요.”라고 조언하며 교환학생 경험이 단순히 외국에 가는 것이 아니라 자신을 돌아보고 성장할 수 있는 소중한 경험임을 강조했다.

Exchange programs offer students more than academic achievements— they provide opportunities to understand diverse cultures, connect with people, and reflect on themselves. Both Diana and Seong overcame challenges in unfamiliar environments and grew personally through their unique experiences abroad. The sense of accomplishment they gained will empower them to face future challenges with confidence and resilience.

Q. What are the key factors evaluated during the exchange student selection process?

Park: There are three main criteria. First, language proficiency for the host country is crucial. Students should prepare the required language scores to keep up with courses at the host university. Second, academic performance matters. A strong GPA reflects dedication and reassures us that the student will maintain their studies abroad. Third, enthusiasm is essential. We assess how well the student has researched the host country and university, as well as their motivation for the exchange experience, through interviews and application materials.

Q. 교환학생을 선발하는 과정에서 가장 중요하게 평가하는 부분은 무엇인가요?

Park: 선발 과정에서는 세 가지를 중점적으로 봅니다. 첫 번째는 해당 국가의 언어 능력입니다. 파견 대학에서 수업을 따라가기 위해 필요한 언어 성적을 미리 준비해 두는 것이 중요합니다. 두 번째는 학점입니다. 높은 학점은 학생의 성실함을 보여주는 지표이기도 하고, ‘이 학생이 해외에 나가서도 꾸준히 학업을 이어 가겠다’는 신뢰를 줍니다. 세 번째는 열정입니다. 면접이나 지원서에서 학생이 해당 국가와 희망 학교에 대해 얼마나 조사했는지, 그리고 교환학생 경험에 대해 얼마나 의욕적인지를 평가합니다.

Q. What are the goals the university aims to achieve through the exchange student program?

Park: The main goals are to help students develop a global perspective through their study abroad experience and to strengthen relationships with our partner universities. The program not only supports individual growth but also enhances cooperation between institutions.

Park: 첫 번째 목표는 학생들이 해외 유학 경험을 통해 국제적 감각을 익히는 것입니다. 이를 바탕으로 학생들이 지역 사회와 글로벌 무대에서 인재로 성장하기를 기대합니다. 두 번째는 자매 대학과의 관계를 강화하는 것입니다. 교환학생 프로그램은 단순히 학생 파견에 그치지 않고, 협력 대학 간의 교류를 더욱 원활히 하는 역할도 하기 때문에 이 두 가지를 주요 목표로 하고 있습니다.

Q. What skills or experiences do you expect students to gain through the exchange student program?

Park: First and foremost, I hope students will acquire proficiency in the language of the host country. Additionally, as the program involves students from various nationalities, I believe it’s crucial for students to develop a multicultural perspective through interaction. Ultimately, I hope the program helps students grow into global talents with a broader worldview.

Q. 학생들이 교환학생 프로그램을 통해 어떤 능력이나 경험을 얻기를 기대하시나요?

Park: 무엇보다도, 해당 국가의 언어를 습득하기를 가장 바라고 있습니다. 또한, 교환학생 프로그램에는 다양한 국적의 학생들이 참여하기 때문에, 이들과 교류하며 다문화적 감각을 키우는 것도 중요하다고 생각합니다. 교환학생 프로그램을 통해 학생들이 더 넓은 시각을 가진 글로벌 인재로 성장하길 바랍니다.

Q. Can you share any achievements of students who participated in the exchange program at CWNU?

Park: One student presented research in Japan with great success, while another continued their studies there for a master's degree. Some international exchange students also returned to enroll in our Korean Language Institute or academic programs after their exchange.

Q. 국립창원대의 교환학생 프로그램에 참여했던 학생들 (본교 및 외국인) 의 후속 활동이나 성과가 있다면 소개해 주실 수 있나요?

Park: 일본으로 교환학생을 다녀온 학생이 현지에서 연구 발표를 해 좋은 성과를 낸 사례가 있습니다. 또 다른 학생은 교환학생 경험에 만족해 졸업 후 해당 대학에서 석사 과정을 시작하기도 했습니다. 반대로, 우리 학교로 온 교환학생 중 일부는 프로그램을 마친 후 국립창원대학교의 한국어학당이나 학부, 석사 과정에 재입학하기도 했습니다.

Q. What efforts are being made to improve student satisfaction with the exchange program?

Park: We offer regular counseling for students interested in the program and run various activities like the buddy program and cultural experiences to encourage student interaction and engagement.

Q. 학생들의 교환학생 프로그램 만족도를 높이기 위해 기울이고 있는 노력이 있다면 무엇인가요?

Park: 교환학생 프로그램에 관심 있는 학생들을 위해 늘 상담 시스템을 운영하고 있습니다. 뿐만 아니라, 학생 간 교류를 활성화하기 위해 버디 프로그램, 문화 체험 활동 등의 다양한 프로그램을 꾸준히 운영하고 있습니다.

Q. Any advice for students at CWNU dreaming of an exchange program?

Park: I recommend investing time in language studies, as language proficiency plays a key role in the selection process. Also, take the opportunity to grow by experiencing diverse cultures abroad.

Q. 교환학생을 꿈꾸는 국립창원대 학생들에게 특별히 전하고 싶은 조언이 있다면 무엇인가요?

Park: 교환학생 선발 시 외국어 능력의 비중이 크기 때문에, 사전에 언어 공부에 충분히 투자하시기를 권장합니다. 또한, 해외에서 다양한 문화권을 경험하며 스스로 성장할 기회를 적극적으로 잡으셨으면 합니다.
