세계로 향하는 국립창원대, 글로벌 경험의 장을 열다

In the rapidly evolving global era, 'global competency' is no longer an option but a necessity in all fields, including education, careers, and culture. Particularly, the global experiences gained during university years serve as a crucial foundation for academic growth and future planning, going beyond mere resume building.

빠르게 발전하는 글로벌 시대에 교육, 직업, 문화 등 모든 분야에서 '글로벌 역량'은 더 이상 선택이 아닌 필수이다. 특히 대학 시절의 글로벌 경험은 단순한 스펙 쌓기를 넘어, 학문적 성장과 미래 설계에 중요한 발판이 된다.

In line with this trend, CWNU is offering various programs to enhance students' global competencies. The Office of Student Affairs supports students in gaining firsthand experiences of the world through overseas volunteer work and cultural exploration trips, while the International Affairs & Education Center provides opportunities for deeper global experiences, including exchange programs, one-to-one programs, language studies, major-specific study groups for international students, International Summer Camps, and major-related overseas explorations.

이러한 시대적 흐름에 발맞춰 국립창원대학교는 학생들의 글로벌 역량 강화를 위해 다양한 프로그램을 제공하고 있다. 학생과에서는 해외봉사, 해외문화탐방 등을 통해 학생들이 직접 세계를 경험하고 넓은 시야를 가질 수 있도록 지원하며, 국제교류교육원에서는 교환학생, 원투원 프로그램, 어학연수, 유학생 전공학습 스터디, International Summer Camp, 전공해외탐방 등 보다 심층적인 글로벌 경험을 쌓을 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

This semester, The Campus Journal will support the global challenges of CWNU students by publishing four special feature articles. We will meet students who participated in the diverse foreign programs offered by the university and share their vivid experiences and passionate stories. The first article will introduce the experiences of students who gained valuable insights through overseas volunteer work and cultural exploration trips.

The Campus Journal은 이번 학기, 국립창원대학교 학생들의 글로벌 도전을 응원하며 총 4편의 특별 기획 기사를 작성한다. 국립창원대학교가 제공하는 다채로운 글로벌 프로그램에 참여한 학생들을 만나 그들의 생생한 경험과 뜨거운 열정을 전달할 예정이다. 첫 번째 기사에서는 해외봉사와 해외문화탐방을 통해 값진 경험을 쌓은 학생들의 이야기를 소개한다.

Healing Beyond Borders: A Nursing Student's Impactful Volunteer Experience

해외봉사로 나눔을 실천한 간호학과 천민지 학생

Cheon Min-ji, a Nursing Student of CWNU has had a dream since childhood: to engage in overseas volunteer work. She has had a strong desire to become a professional nurse, providing medical support to those in need and healing the wounds of those who are suffering. The overseas volunteer program at CWNU became a precious first step towards that dream. "I believed that this program would not only bring me closer to my goal, but also provide an opportunity for personal growth through various challenges," she said. With excitement and anticipation, Min-ji participated in the overseas volunteer program, where she spent an unforgettable 9 days and 7 nights in Vietnam, gaining invaluable experiences.

천민지 학생은 어릴 적부터 꿈꾸던 목표가 하나 있었다. 바로 해외 봉사다. 전문적인 간호사가 되어 도움이 필요한 사람들에게 의료 지원을 제공하고, 아픔을 겪는 이들의 상처를 치유해주고 싶은 마음이 컸다. 국립창원대학교 해외 봉사 프로그램은 그 꿈을 향한 소중한 첫걸음이 되었다. "이 프로그램을 통해 제 목표에 한 발짝 더 다가갈 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 다양한 도전을 통해 스스로 성장할 수 있는 기회가 될 거라 생각했어요." 그렇게 그녀는 설렘과 기대를 안고 해외 봉사 프로그램에 참여하여 7박 9일간 베트남에서 잊지 못할 경험을 쌓았다.

After arriving in Vietnam, Min-ji had a two-day adaptation period. During this time, she learned basic Vietnamese and explored the village, broadening her understanding of Vietnamese culture and life. The actual volunteer activities began with health education for students with hearing impairments. Min-ji utilized the lesson materials she had prepared in advance to conduct engaging classes tailored to the children's level, such as making the Korean flag out of soap and teaching dental hygiene using paper gum models. She reflected, "While teaching the children about brushing their teeth, I realized that I should become a nurse who not only treats illnesses, but also focuses on prevention and health promotion."

베트남 도착 후 이틀 동안은 현지 적응 기간을 가졌다. 기초적인 베트남어를 배우고 마을을 둘러보며 베트남의 문화와 삶에 대한 이해를 넓혔다. 본격적인 봉사활동은 청각장애 학생들을 위한 보건 교육으로 시작되었다. 민지 학생은 미리 준비한 수업 자료를 활용하여 비누로 태극기 만들기, 종이 잇몸 모형으로 양치 교육하기 등 아이들의 눈높이에 맞춘 흥미로운 수업을 진행했다. "아이들에게 양치질 교육을 하면서 위생 관리의 중요성을 다시 한번 깨닫게 되었어요. 단순히 치료하는 것을 넘어, 예방과 건강 증진까지 아우르는 간호사가 되어야겠다고 다짐을 하게 되었어요."

She also dedicated her time to improving the school environment. With the hope that students could spend their time in a brighter setting, Min-ji dedicated herself to painting murals, contributing her small touch to create a vibrant atmosphere within the school.

학교 환경 개선을 위한 노력 봉사도 잊지 않았다. 학생들이 조금이나마 더 밝은 환경에서 지내기를 바라는 마음으로 정성을 담아 벽화를 그려 넣으며 활기찬 분위기의 학교를 조성하기 위해 작은 손길을 보탰다.

The most memorable moment during her volunteer activities was when she felt the warm hearts of the children. "After class, when the kids ran up to me with smiles, hugged me, and expressed their gratitude in sign language, I was deeply moved. Although communication was challenging, I felt that sincerity transcends words."

봉사 활동 중 가장 기억에 남는 순간은 아이들의 따뜻한 마음을 느꼈을 때였다. "수업 후 아이들이 웃으며 달려와 안아주고, 수화로 고마움을 표현했을 때 큰 감동을 받았어요. 비록 의사소통은 어려웠지만, 진심은 통한다는 것을 느꼈어요."

Of course, there were challenges as well. The sight of children struggling to survive in harsh conditions deeply saddened Min-ji. In particular, witnessing children who were so emaciated from long-term hunger that their bones were visible, rummaging through piles of garbage to find food, had a profound impact on her. "I realized that food we carelessly leave behind could be a desperate source of nutrition for someone else. This made me appreciate the value of small things in life once again, and I resolved to live with more gratitude."

물론 어려움도 있었다. 열악한 환경 속에서 힘겹게 살아가는 아이들의 모습은 민지 학생의 마음을 아프게 했다. 특히, 오랫동안 굶주려 뼈가 앙상하게 드러난 아이들이 쓰레기 더미를 뒤져 음식을 찾는 모습은 그녀에게 큰 충격을 안겨주었다. "우리가 무심코 남긴 음식이 누군가에게는 간절한 식량이 될 수 있다는 사실을 깨달았어요. 생활 속 작은 것들의 소중함을 다시 한번 느끼고, 앞으로 더욱 감사하며 살아가겠다고 다짐하는 계기가 되었습니다.”

At first, Min-ji was afraid of communicating with unfamiliar foreigners, but through her overseas volunteer experience, her heart opened wide. The interactions with the warm-hearted Vietnamese who welcomed the volunteer team were particularly unforgettable. She said, "I was moved by the way they recommended milder foods for team members who couldn't adapt to unfamiliar dishes and kindly explained the Vietnamese culture." Thanks to the locals' consideration, Min-ji was able to gain a deeper understanding of Vietnamese culture and feel a sense of warmth. Now, she expresses a desire to meet people from even more diverse cultures.

처음에는 낯선 외국인과의 소통이 두려웠던 민지 학생이지만, 해외봉사를 통해 그녀의 마음은 활짝 열렸다. 특히, 따뜻한 마음으로 봉사단을 맞아준 베트남 현지인들과의 교류는 잊지 못할 경험이었다. "낯선 음식에 적응하지 못하는 단원들을 위해 향신료가 덜한 음식을 추천해주고, 베트남 문화에 대해 친절하게 설명해주는 모습에 감동했어요." 그녀는 현지인들의 배려 덕분에 베트남 문화를 더욱 깊이 이해하고 따뜻한 정을 느낄 수 있었다며 이제는 오히려 더 다양한 문화권의 사람들을 만나보고 싶다고 말한다.

The time spent with fellow volunteers also became a cherished memory. "Even though we were strangers at first, we created unforgettable memories by trusting and relying on each other in challenging situations. It was a great fortune to interact with people from various fields and broaden my knowledge. I want to share the warmth I have received in Vietnam with my loved ones," she expressed.

함께 봉사활동을 수행한 단원들과의 만남도 소중한 추억으로 남았다. "처음 만난 사이였지만, 어려운 상황 속에서 서로 믿고 의지하며 잊지 못할 추억을 만들었어요. 다양한 분야의 사람들과 교류하며 견문을 넓힐 수 있었던 것도 큰 행운이었죠. 이렇게 베트남에서 받은 따뜻한 마음을 저 또한 소중한 사람들에게 전해주고 싶어요."

From Theory to Reality: An International Relations Student's Cultural Exploration

국제관계학과 이소현 학생의 문화탐방 이야기

Lee Sou-hyeon, a student of International Relations at CWNU had to put her dream of studying abroad on hold due to COVID-19. However, instead of feeling discouraged, she found a new opportunity. Through the overseas cultural exploration program at CWNU, she was finally able to go to the States she had long dreamed of. "It was truly disappointing to have to give up on my bucket list goal of studying abroad during my college life. However, I felt a new sense of excitement when I could join the cultural exploration program, thanks to a friend's suggestion.”

이소현 학생은 코로나19로 인해 교환학생의 꿈을 접어야 했다. 하지만 좌절 대신 새로운 기회를 찾아냈다. 바로 창원대학교 해외문화탐방 프로그램을 통해 꿈에 그리던 미국 땅을 밟게 된 것이다. "대학 생활의 버킷리스트였던 교환학생을 포기해야 했을 때는 정말 아쉬웠죠. 하지만 친구의 제안으로 미국 문화탐방 프로그램에 참여하게 되면서 새로운 설렘을 느꼈어요."

Sou-hyeon had a wealth of theoretical knowledge about various countries, including the States, due to her major in International Relations. However, she was very curious about how these countries actually work and how they relate to her field of study. In particular, for someone like her who dreams of working in the trade sector, the work environment and actual processes of multinational and overseas companies were of even greater interest.

소현 학생은 국제관계학 전공으로 미국을 비롯한 다양한 국가에 대한 이론적 지식은 풍부했지만, 실제로 그 나라들이 어떻게 돌아가는지, 자신의 전공과 어떤 연관성이 있는지 궁금증이 컸다. 특히, 무역 분야 취업을 꿈꾸는 그녀에게 다국적 기업과 해외 기업들의 업무 환경과 실제 프로세스는 더욱 큰 관심사였다.

During the 10-day journey, Sou-hyeon explored San Francisco and Los Angeles, accumulating a rich array of experiences. By visiting famous tourist spots like Union Square and the Ferry Building, she was able to closely observe the lives of locals. In addition, listening to the vivid stories of professionals working at global companies such as Google, Intel, Amazon, and Skechers, helped her nurture her dreams for the future. In particular, the interview with a Google engineer left a lasting impression on her. "It was a valuable opportunity to gain specific information about working for overseas companies. I gained confidence that I can turn my vaguely envisioned dream into reality," she reflected.

10일간의 여정 동안 소현 학생은 샌프란시스코와 LA를 탐험하며 다채로운 경험을 쌓았다. 유니언 스퀘어, 페리 빌딩 등 유명 관광지를 둘러보며 현지인들의 삶을 가까이에서 느꼈고, 구글, 인텔, 아마존, 스케쳐스 등 세계적인 기업에서 활약하는 현직자들의 생생한 이야기를 들으며 미래를 향한 꿈을 키웠다. 특히, 구글 엔지니어와의 인터뷰는 그녀에게 깊은 인상을 남겼다. "해외 기업 취업에 대한 구체적인 정보를 얻을 수 있는 소중한 시간이었어요. 막연하게 생각했던 꿈을 현실로 만들 수 있다는 자신감을 얻었습니다."

This experience has greatly enhanced Sou-hyeon's confidence in her career path and helped her develop global competencies. She shared, "I was able to set specific goals for my career in the retail industry that I had only vaguely considered before, and I gained confidence in my English skills. Additionally, through the travel preparation process, I developed problem-solving abilities and independence. My perspective on understanding different cultures has broadened, and communicating with foreigners is no longer a source of fear for me."

해외문화탐방 경험은 소현 학생의 진로 설정에 확신을 더해주고 글로벌 역량을 키우는 데 큰 도움이 되었다. "막연하게 생각했던 무역 분야에 대한 구체적인 목표를 세우게 되었고, 영어에 대한 자신감도 얻었어요. 또한, 여행 준비 과정에서 스스로 문제를 해결하며 자립심도 키울 수 있었어요. 다양한 문화를 이해하는 시야도 넓어졌고, 외국인과의 소통도 더 이상 두렵지 않아요."

However, encountering unfamiliar cultures brought both excitement and challenges. "The reality of America was different from what I had seen in movies. Seeing homeless people and drug addicts made me realize the seriousness of social issues, and it was shocking to find that I couldn't walk around safely late at night," she reflected.

하지만 낯선 문화와의 만남은 설렘과 동시에 어려움도 안겨주었다. "미국은 영화에서 보던 것과는 달랐어요. 노숙자와 마약 중독자들을 보며 사회 문제의 심각성을 느꼈고, 밤 늦게까지 안전하게 돌아다닐 수 없다는 점도 충격적이었습니다."

Unexpected situations also arose. She sometimes got lost in unfamiliar surroundings or faced communication difficulties. However, these experiences gifted her a broader and deeper perspective on the world. "I realized that what I know is not everything. Moving forward, I will strive to view and understand the world with a wider lens," she said.

예상치 못한 상황도 발생했다. 낯선 환경에서 길을 잃거나 의사소통에 어려움을 겪기도 했다. 하지만 이러한 경험들은 그녀에게 세상을 더 넓고 깊이 있게 바라보는 시각을 선물했다. "내가 아는 것이 전부가 아니라는 것을 깨달았어요. 앞으로는 더 넓은 시야로 세상을 바라보고 이해하려 노력할 것입니다."

Not only did Sou-hyeon experience academic growth, but the memories she created with her friends became even more special. "Every moment remains a precious memory: my friend getting soaked by the waves at the beach, shivering from the cold on the Golden Gate Bridge, and even the time we helped a friend who almost got scammed by a foreigner," she recounted. Facing unexpected situations together deepened her friendship. "The moments that would have been difficult alone were made easier and more enjoyable thanks to my friends. It was a trip that was both fun and meaningful because we were together."

학문적인 성장뿐만 아니라, 소현 학생에게는 친구들과 함께 만든 추억이 더욱 특별하게 남았다. "바닷가에서 파도에 젖은 친구, 골든 브리지에서 추위에 떨던 친구, 외국인에게 사기를 당할 뻔한 친구를 도와준 일 등 모든 순간이 소중한 추억으로 남아 있어요." 예상치 못한 상황들을 함께 헤쳐나가며 친구들과의 우정도 더욱 깊어졌다. "혼자였다면 힘들었을 순간들을 친구들 덕분에 웃으며 극복할 수 있었어요. 함께여서 더욱 즐겁고 의미 있는 여행이었죠."

Finding 'Myself' in an Unfamiliar Place

Experiences gained in unfamiliar environments and among new people can sometimes be frightening and challenging, but within those experiences, we encounter a larger world and continue to develop. The stories of Min-ji and Sou-hyeon vividly illustrate the value of such 'challenges.'

낯선 환경과 사람들 속에서 얻는 경험은 때로는 두렵고 어려울 수 있지만, 그 속에서 우리는 더 큰 세상을 만나고 성장한다. 소현 학생과 민지 학생의 이야기는 바로 그러한 '도전'의 가치를 생생하게 보여준다.

Sou-hyeon emphasized the importance of "building various experiences with a positive mindset," and advised actively seeking opportunities to encounter different cultures, not only abroad, but also within the school. Min-ji echoed this sentiment, stating that, "overseas volunteer work is a precious opportunity to meet a new world and grow into a greater version of myself," encouraging younger students to embrace courageous challenges. The stories of these two students resonate deeply, reminding us of the significance of challenges and the invaluable experiences we can gain through them.

소현 학생은 "긍정적인 마인드로 다양한 경험을 쌓는 것이 중요하다"고 강조하며, 해외 경험뿐만 아니라 학교 안에서도 다양한 문화를 접할 수 있는 기회를 적극 활용할 것을 조언했다. 민지 학생 역시 "해외봉사는 새로운 세상과 만나고 더 큰 나로 성장할 수 있는 소중한 기회"라며 후배들에게 용기 있는 도전을 응원했다. 두 학생의 이야기는 우리에게 도전의 중요성과 그 과정에서 얻을 수 있는 값진 경험에 대한 깊은 울림을 준다.
