In an increasingly globalized world, knowledge of foreign languages has become an essential asset. In response to this need, the International Affairs & Education Center at CWNU provides foreign language education programs to enhance students' global perspectives and understanding of diverse cultures. These programs are operated every semester and offer students the opportunity to improve their language skills and develop international awareness. Through an interview with the staff of the International Affairs & Education Center, The Campus Journal delved into the operation of these foreign language education programs and examined how they contribute to strengthening students’ global competencies.

Q. Please introduce yourself.

Choi: Hello, I am Choi Yoo- eun, in charge of language education programs at the International Affairs & Education Center.

Q. What is the background of the implementation of foreign language education programs for students at CWNU?

Choi: To grow into a competitive talent on the diversified global stage, foreign language education is the basic requirement. According to Job Korea’s 2022 analysis of successful applicants to large companies, foreign language proficiency is still the most important job requirement. Based on our long- term development plan (strengthening the global competencies of our students) and education satisfaction surveys, our university recognized the increasing social demand for improving students' foreign language abilities. As a result, we have introduced various foreign language education programs to strengthen the capabilities of our students.

Q. Could you describe the types of foreign language education programs currently available and highlight their unique features?

Choi: First, we offer an English enhancement program, which includes TOEIC, TOEIC Speaking, and OPIc, conducted as regular and special lecture courses. In addition, second foreign language enhancement programs are offered, including Japanese, Chinese, German, and French, focusing on conversational skills, language test score improvement, and employment- related education. To maintain practical skills, online TOEIC simulations are available throughout the year, and the English Lounge offers opportunities for reserved students to practice English conversation and participate in various English activities. More detailed information such as, "Smart Language Learning for CWNU Students," and "Exchange Language Program Guide," can be found in the "Foreign Language Learning Guide," on the website of the International Affairs & Education Center (Language).

Q. Do you have any plans to further develop the foreign language education programs in the future?

Choi: Our goal is to develop and operate foreign language education programs that students want and need. Most students seek to learn foreign languages to improve their communication skills for international activities and strengthen their competitiveness for employment. Therefore, we plan to offer customized foreign language conversation classes that focus on communication skills, enabling students to communicate freely in foreign languages. In addition, we intend to provide support measures such as special discount agreements for major official language tests, including TOEIC, TOEIC Speaking, and OPIc, and a guide for using related programs to help students achieve the language scores needed for employment.

Q. Lastly, please make a remark to the students at CWNU.

Choi: I hope that students will take a greater interest in the various foreign language education programs offered by the school. While some courses fill up within minutes of registration opening, some courses require additional registration. During the semester, there are English education and activities that take advantage of free periods, and during vacations, there are programs available for intensive study. I hope that by utilizing the International Affairs & Education Center's foreign language programs throughout your four years at the University, you will be able to speak at least one foreign language and obtain the language scores needed for employment by the time you graduate.

The foreign language education programs at CWNU's International Affairs & Education Center are expected to provide an essential stepping stone for growing into a global talent. Detailed information about the foreign language education programs at the International Affairs & Education Center can be found on the e- Dream system notices, CWNU app PUSH notifications, and Waggle. We hope that students will take their first step toward the global stage at CWNU.
