CWNU is preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution

Now the world is active in preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This is going to be the industrial revolution of the next generation with high tech information communication technology, such as artificial intelligence and BI (business intelligence) data etc, blending economically and socially. Through the revolution, intelligence technologies will converge on existing industries and services or combine with new technologies such as robotics and nanotechnology. So, it will intelligently link all of the world’s products and services to the network. Also, it will greatly affect a wider range compared to the existing industrial revolutions because it is characterizing hyper-connectivity and hyper-intelligence. Like this, the Fourth Industrial Revolution has become an issue of the ages. So, President Moon established the ‘Committee on the Fourth Industrial Revolution’ for making us a leading country of the revolution. He will make cooperation between the private sector and the government with this committee. Also President Moon will implement making Wifi installation in public facilities obligatory, expanding the ICT infrastructure, founding and expanding of small businesses’ enterprises and supporting industry field related software.

Also, the Prime (Program for Industrial needs-Matched Education) business is actively progressing. The Prime business is a project that reduces the number of students in the humanities and art·music·physical affiliation and supports school restructuring and expanding the number of students in natural sciences and engineering. This project is designed to enhance the connectivity between industries and education and the government grants subsidies to colleges which expand the number of students in natural sciences and engineering. This will be viewed in terms of universities, companies and students. First, it is positive because universities can provide opportunities for employment to students by connecting with companies. But they can receive subsidies when they expand the number of students in natural sciences and engineering so this leads to negative consequences such as the combination and abolition of certain departments. Also, for companies it is positive because they can obtain excellent human resources from various students. But it is negative that students lose diversity because they can only be supported by students in certain fields. Lastly, students will begin to specialize in specific areas, but the diversity of education might be reduced.

Like this, while the government is implementing a vigorous support policy, CWNU is also showing some moves to prepare for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. On May 17, ‘The 2017 1st Global Startup Network Conference’ was hosted at CWNU in building 81’s international conference room. The conference was held for creating a base of globalization and providing global vision and information to found and open a new industrial-educational cooperation prospect.

On that day, CWNU invited celebrated scholars and experts from Europe and Asia. They studied and debated the foundation support policies of each country and they established a global foundation information network. Global scholars from countries around the world including Malaysia, Japan, Portugal, China and more have offered valuable information and different views to students.

Furthermore, there are rumors circulating that the Prime business is going to be implemented in CWNU. Before, CWNU had been progressing with department restructuring. In 2013, the university reorganized special graduate schools and underwent department structural improvement for the purpose of national university advancement. First, three departments disappeared, because they were similar departments. The Faculty of Economics and Finance and Insurance, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and the Faculty of New Materials Engineering are the result of the change. Furthermore, competitive departments such as Mechatronics Engineering was combined with the Department of New Material Engineering. So it became a mechatronics fusion college. Also, some graduate schools' operational output was insufficient. So the previous 8 graduate schools were reduced to 6.

Like this, because of the former department restructuring, students are feeling anxious. But CWNU’s planning section said, “We don't have any schedule about that. Prime business is unlikely to happen in our school and an entrance quota can reduce through university structural reform evaluation. This will be evaluated in March next year and after that, we can receive the result,” and they added, “students don't need to shake with anxiety.”
