Kids English Intensive Camp
A teaching assistant helping students

This summer CWNU¡¯s LEC (Language Education Center) held its 2015 Summer Kids English Intensive Camp. Around 60 students from all over Changwon attended the month-long camp. Five foreign teachers who teach for the LEC and the new ELP program taught various classes to improve skills in listening, speaking, reading writing, as well as an integration course which mixes various subjects in a unique and interesting way. Students create a strong bond with new friends and many come back in the following camps. The camp is held every summer and winter. Aside from the core classes, students also take an activity class such as filmmaking, music, English games, magic tricks, poetry writing, and more. There is also a field trip. This summer, students visited the National Maritime Museum in Busan where they saw sharks, turtles, and other fish, watched a 4D movie, learned about Korean boat history, and even robot fish!

The foreign teachers of the camp are not the only ones who worked hard to make the camp a fun success for the elementary level students. The camp manager and teaching assistants also did a lot of hard work for the 7 hour work days, 5 days a week. These teaching assistants are students of CWNU from different majors. There is an application process to become a teaching assistant for the winter and summer camps at the end of each semester. It¡¯s a lot of hard work, but it can be a great month of doing something very meaningful. If you have an interest in teaching, kids, or working hard during the summer, it might be a great idea to contact the LEC and find out about being an assistant during the next camp.

At the end of the camp the students performed various productions of singing, magic tricks, plays, and even speeches during the closing ceremony with their families in attendance. They worked hard to practice and perform these skits and really did a great job. Also, the director of the LEC gave an encouraging speech to the students and parents.

The intensive summer camp is a great program for elementary students to learn English during the summer holiday. During level testing before the camp begins, students are divided into different classes according to their English level. This makes the camp more efficient and fun for the teachers and students. It¡¯s also a great opportunity for university students who are interested in practicing their own English skills because speaking English only (no Korean!) is required. It¡¯s an organic environment for everyone to practice their language skills!
