On April 7th, 2015, the Department of Nursing in CWNU held ‘The 4th Nightingale Swearing-in Ceremony’ at the College of Natural Science (Building Number 32) in lecture room 110. The ‘Nightingale Swearing-in Ceremony’ is the most important event of the year for the Department of Nursing. In this ceremony, the third year students of nursing department hold candles to remind themselves of the spirit of sacrifice and service before they go out for their clinical training. At the same time, they pledge themselves to do their best in order to carry out responsibilities and duties as professional nurses. Many guests including Lee Chan-gyu (the president of CWNU), Kim il-gun (the Dean of Natural Science College), Lee Kyung-ok (Kyeongnam Nurse Association President), Park Yang-dong (Kyeongnam Doctor Association President) and students’ parents participated to congratulate the 29 third grade students.
The ceremony consisted of the opening ceremony, the pledge of allegiance, candlelight ceremony, Nightingale Swearing-in, the nursing department dean’s greeting, guests’ congratulatory address, celebration stage of department juniors and singing the university song. During the candlelight ceremony, the atmosphere was more solemn than any other time. Some students shed tears in mixed emotions while their juniors were performing on the celebration stage. After the ceremony was finished, they had time to take photos and receive gifts from parents and acquaintances. The department held a meeting for their parents as well. This meeting was the time to satisfy their curiosities about their children’s campus life.
Kang Hye-won, the third year students of the nursing department said, “I think the Nightingale Swearing-in Ceremony is the first step to becoming a nurse. After the ceremony, I felt worried about my accomplishment and anticipate various experiences at the hospitals, as a nurse. I made up my mind to become a warm-hearted nurse like a Nightingale. "
