Feel English in the English Lounge

If you are continually trying to improve your English by studying alone, you will only really make progress in reading and listening comprehension. It will still be difficult for you to speak English. However, there is a solution; The English Lounge. It is located on the 2nd floor of the Sarim Student Hall building, at CWNU. There are lots of things available, like an English speaking proficiency test, the English Clinic, and daily conversation.

English speaking proficiency test

This is a level test with a native teacher. It takes about 30 minutes and you can book a level test in advance. After the test you are made aware of your level instantly. You will be placed in one of five levels: Beginner, High Beginner, Low Intermediate, Intermediate, High-Intermediate ~ Advanced.

English Clinic

The English Clinic is for those students who have already completed a resume and want it to be checked by a native teacher. The student must have already completed it before they show it to the teacher because the teacher will not write it for them, they only check it. Students can also ask for advice regarding job interviews, but again they must already have prepared answers to any questions and they should make an appointment well in advance, not on the day of their interview.

Daily Conversation

You can talk freely, with a native teacher, for a maximum time of 20 minutes.

Other activities

Outside of the above three items mentioned students can enjoy English in lots of ways like movies, newspapers and games. Every afternoon, the English Lounge shows a movie. Anyone can enjoy it without Korean subtitles, sitting on soft and comfortable chairs. Also, there are lots of games such as Jenga. If you are bored for studying, you can play English games with your friends.

Make the most of the English Lounge

Only native teachers are in the English lounge. You can make a reservation by talking to staff or by phone (055-213-2446). The English Lounge is open until December 5th but it is closed for midterm exam week (10.18~10.26).

The next is the interview with a member of staff at the English Lounge, Jeong Jong-wook.

Q. What do you do as a member of staff?

Jeong: The main job is managing students' entrance and exit. Also, I help the native teachers and students who participate in the events at the English Lounge.

Q. What points do you like about the English Lounge?

Jeong: I think it is great to stay in a place where I can use English freely. If I speak English in my daily life, I will get uncomfortable attention from people. The best advantage is that I work where I can speak in English.

Q. What do you want to say to CWNU students?

Jeong: I would like to emphasize that you can participate these great programs for free. If I were you, I would study English in an English friendly atmosphere.

If you want to get more information about English Lounge, go to the Language Education Center's homepage (http://portal.changwon.ac.kr/home/lang) or call 055-213-2446.
