Survey of CWNU Students¡¯ Reading Habits
See the results of a survey about the reading habits of CWNU students

We all know that reading is important. But it seems like reading has become a chore to most university students. Many students play with their smart phones or watch TV, but won¡¯t turn over a single page of a book. The gradual decline in students¡¯ reading habits is not a recent phenomenon, so we conducted a reading habit survey of 130 CWNU students.

The first question was: How many books do you read a month? As expected, about half (68) read 1 to 2 books (52%), 11 read 3 to 4 books (8%), and only 5 people (4%) read more than 5 books. What is remarkable is that 45 people (35%) never read a book a month. This shows how serious the decline in reading is.

Next, we asked the average time spent reading. Less than half the respondents (46%) read less than 30 minutes a day, while 27 (21%) read a book for 30 minutes to an hour. A small percentage of students (5%) read books for 1-2 hours. The same number read for more than 2 hours. Students don¡¯t try to make time for reading.

The third question was: What types of books do you like to read? Table 3 show that students read literature (novels, poems, essays) the most (38%) followed by self-help books (8%), mysteries (6%), and politics & society (6%)

The last question asked the student why they dislike books or what prevents you from reading. The reasons were enjoying other activities (32%), too busy with work or study (31%), and unaccustomed to reading (25%). Others said, ¡°Using my smart phone keeps me away from books,¡± and ¡°the atmosphere is not good for reading.¡±

Reading is exercise for the mind, especially in these days that emphasize self-improvement and the humanities. Books help us to think more broadly and put things into perspective. In an evolving society, reading is crucial for gaining necessary information and insights in order to face diverse challenges. It is a good time to read. Why don¡¯t you drop by a library right now?
