CPR Training, the Four-Minute Miracle

On May 14th, a CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) training session was held at the CWNU Bongrim Student Hall. The session was put on by the Changwon Health Center, and the Korean National Red Cross (KNRC).

CPR is called the four-minute miracle. When a person suffers a sudden heart attack, his or her heartbeat and breathing stop. If the person doesn't receive CPR treatment within four minutes, brain damage begins and leads to death. Since a medical team's arrival normally takes more than four minutes, an ordinary citizen's ability to perform CPR is considered the most important factor in resuscitating a person's life.

The KNRC instructor, Kim Chae-yoon, said, "Last year, more than 27,000 people suffered sudden heart attacks in Korea. However, only 4% of these patients were given CPR. Though CPR saves lives, the rate of implementation in Korea (4%) is much lower than in other developed countries (30%) like Japan and the USA." After the lecture, students and school personnel practiced CPR using artificial human bodies.

Kim Sang-eun (Dept. of Nursing Science), who participated in the training session, said, "I learned this when I was a middle school student. Today, I got to know CPR better after personally doing the exercises. I think CPR training is needed by all people."

Here is how to perform CPR: First, fold your hands and press the center of the breastbone at a rate of 100 times per minute. Second, push back the subject's head to free the airway. Third, pinch the subject's nose and breath into the mouth. Fourth, check the respiration of the patient. If the subject isn¡¯t breathing, repeat these steps.
