Do you know Hangeul Day? It's a national holiday on Oct. 9th that commemorates the creation of Hangeul, and encourages the study of Hangeul. This year was the 567th anniversary and it became a public holiday starting this year.
To celebrate Hangeul Day, the Department of Korean Language & Literature held 'Hangeul week' from Oct. 7th to Oct. 10th. This was the first year for the event, and professors and students created the slogan, 'Hangeul, colored into CWNU'. Events consisted of many instructive and interesting activities.
On the 1st day, a writing contest was held at Chung-un-ji, the lake near the school dormitory, and there was an exhibition of illustrated poems in front of the College of Humanities. In the writing contest, students wrote their stories and thoughts through poetry or prose. "My hobby is writing. I was glad to enter a story in the contest to celebrate Hangeul Day," says Ryu Ye-som (Department of Korean Language & Literature). The exhibition displayed poems that students wrote and illustrated beautifully. People could appreciate the poems while walking along the road. On the last day, at the Bongrim Student Hall, there was a lecture by poet Jeong Il-geun, and also a quiz contest about Hangeul. There was also an award ceremony for the writing contest. Many people enjoyed the lecture and quiz contest.
These events were meaningful to many students. Students learned about Hangeul Day, took pride in the greatness of Hangeul, and learned the importance of protecting Hangeul. Overall, it was a very informative and meaningful event.
