Plan Your Youth!Interview with Changwon Free-Market Planning Group, Choeongchunmasil
Q) Can you briefly introduce yourself?
A) Nice to meet you. My name is Lee Yeonjin. I am a representative of Choeongchunmasil. Choeongchunmasil is a social enterprise made by students of the Dept. of International Relations. It consists of four members, Kong Sae-mi(08), Kim Seon-mi(09), Park Jeong-jin(07) and me. Masil means ¡°village¡± and ¡°play around.¡± So, Choeongchunmasil¡¯s represent youths making a village for themselves and playing on campus.

Q) What made you make Choeongchunmasil?
A) I come from Busan. So, I felt a lack of things to see and enjoy compared with Busan. I wanted fun things and thought of a farmers market in Canberra where I used to go when I studied in Australia. I wished I could go to a similar farmers market in Changwon. Meanwhile, I knew about the Social Enterpriser Foster Project, so I started with the project¡¯s support.

Q) What does Choeongchunmasil do?
A) We plan a free-market composed of a flea-market, handmade crafts, foods, and events. The free-market¡¯s participants are ordinary people. They are not merchants. So, we just hold a market and help them to sell their articles. For example, we designate their location in the market and perform public relations exercises. Also, we block the access of merchants. And then we endeavor to create a culture.

Q) What kind of difficulties do you have?
A) At first, most people didn¡¯t know about the social enterprise. Even I couldn¡¯t completely accept it. So, I had no choice but to start at the beginning again. Also, although we could receive support funding, we had monetary difficulties because the cases that could receive funding were very limited. In addition, the bureaucracy gave me a hard time. Lastly, because we have a very small staff, we can¡¯t spend a lot of time managing. It¡¯s not an easy task, which you know all too well if you have a part-time job while you¡¯re in school.

Q) What's next for you?
A) In the short term, we will hold another event through all the proceeds from a consignment sale of used books In April. The new event is replacing used paper with new paper. Hopefully, it will become highly sought out and all the people at CWNU will conserve their papers. It also will change people¡¯s perception about paper. In the long run, I would like to make a students¡¯ cooperative with students having an increased interest in these things before graduation. I want students to be the focus, and do something. But social enterprise owners may not be students. This is why I am making a students¡¯ cooperative. And I hope the coorperative will be continued by CWNU students.

Q) Finally, Say what you want to say.
A) I want the President of our university to take an interest in our free-market. I hope to show him that students are competent enough to handle these things, and there is a need for them. I know that ¡°seeing is believing.¡± So, I want our president to set up our free-market in the central library. If possible, we will run the free-market as a consignment store for students living apart from their families, and as a center of resource recycling at CWNU. Furthermore, if we all put a lot of hard work in, it can be a special project for our school. Thank you.
