Let¡¯s Change Our Prejudice against the Disabled
The Dept. of Special Education held its 13th Annual Walking Together event to commemorate the 32nd Day for the Disabled,on April 20th.
This event was similar to last year¡¯s, so there was an Experience of Disabilities event for citizens in front of the Jung Woo shopping arcade on April 14th, and a performance in the auditorium on the main floor of Building 85 at 6:30 p.m. on April 20th.
First, the Experience of Disabilities event, on April 14th, proceeded from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students of Special Education prepared many activities. Some of them were related to visual impairment, including Visual Sense Coordination disability, Tunnel Vision, cane use, etc. Others included sign language, experiments walking with crutches, and using wheelchairs. Many people participated in the event, because it was held on the weekend. People¡¯s reactions after the experience included, ¡°I could understand the difficulties of the disabled while experiencing disability,¡± and, ¡±It was very hard, and I should help them when I see the disabled.¡±
The planner of the event (Bae Ji-eun, Dept. of Special Education ¡®10) said, ¡°I think that our event is successful if prejudice against the disabled changes a little bit thorough our Walking Together program. And I hope people will treat them without discrimination and preconceptions, and that this can lead to society coexisting well together.¡±
I asked one of the freshmen who participated in the event for the first time (Kim Hwa-kyung, Dept. of Special Education ¡®12) how she felt afterwards. She said, ¡®¡¯While studying at school, I didn¡¯t know all the kinds of disabilities. But I learned many kinds of them by helping people to try the Experience of Disabilities activities. I feel that we should enable the disabled to do things by themselves, as well as just help them. Many people didn¡¯t know that there was a Day for the Disabled, but I felt happy when more people learned about it through today¡¯s event.¡±
In addition, the performances on April 20th ran for about two hours. There were some invitational performances by our school groups (4Dabeatz and Phoenix) and disabled children. Also, students from Special Education prepared a sign language performance and played guitar.
I hope this annual event can help people to change their preconceptions. And our task is that we should not discriminate against the disabled and should help them to a better life.
