The first Chair-Professor of CWNU, conductor Gum Nan-se

For the first time since CWNU¡¯s establishment in 1969, the university has appointed a chair-professor, conductor Gum Nan-se. Lee Chan-gyu, President of CWNU, conferred the appointment upon Professor Gum on Monday, Mar. 5th in the main building. And he urged him to endeavor to train young students and contribute to the community.

A chair-professor can be an invited person who has left significant academic achievements or promoted the progress of human society, and who has high character and moral repute, or a celebrated great scholar invited with the assistance of money donated by a company, group or individual.

Prof. Gum was connected with CWNU through the ¡®Gum Nan-se concerts with commentary,¡¯ which were held at Sungsan Art Hall last May. And he participated in academic courses prepared by the CWNU College of Humanities. After his appointment he revealed his ambitions. ¡°One of the problems of music education in our country is that it is bent on fostering soloist oriented styles of playing. Even if a player is accomplished, he can¡¯t create a sensation with the audience if he can¡¯t harmonize with others. I¡¯ll do my best to foster orchestra players who can make fantastic harmony with various people.¡±

As a part of his contribution to the community, Prof. Gum will establish the Gum Nan-se Orchestra Academy to teach students, and will produce diverse performances, such as an opening concert, an evening at the opera, and finale concert for the local community. He will also produce various performance programs with Changwon and nearby cities. And he is planning to attract the cooperation of local businesses.

Prof. Gum graduated from Seoul National University¡¯s Dept. of Composition and Berlin University of the Arts¡¯ Dept. of Conducting. He has served as conductor of the KBS Symphony Orchestra. Currently, he leads the Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as the Euro-Asian Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also active as a guest conductor of orchestras at home and abroad, such as the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, Busan Philharmonic Orchestra and Jeon-ju Cla Mu Philharmonic Orchestra.
