Korean Traditional Winterization

The winter season is fast approaching. As it gets colder day by day, now is the time to prepare for winterization.
Since early times, Korean ancestors got through the winter with their scientific ways. Let¡¯s see Korean traditional winterization from early times.
There are three most common ways:

1. Gimjang Kimchi
Kimchi is one of the traditional Korean foods. So what is Gimjang? Gimjang is an event for making kimchi in large quantities so that it may be stored and eaten during the winter. Since kimchi is the most basic side dish in Korean dining, this is considered a major family event in preparation for the cold season. This Gimjang tradition is one of a kind in the world. Our Gimjang Kimchi is an excellent and unique food because it can be kept well for a long time in crock or earthenware made of clay. Gimjang Kimchi improves with age. Do you know of any other country that has fermented vegetable dish that can be stored and eaten for a long period of time? Are there other foods that improve their flavor while maintaining their freshness and crunchiness? Perhaps none. It is only kimchi, and that is a unique part of the Korean culture.

2. Ondol
Ondol is the Korean floor heating system. Traditionally, the heat of a fire is directed through flues under the floor to heat the room. Nowadays, in most modern homes hot water runs through pipes in the floor. Ondol is the predominant heating system in all Korean homes, even modern apartments. It is a unique heating system in Korea and its thermal efficiency is good. Also its fuel consumption and installation are economical, and it rarely breaks down.

3. Hanbok
Hanbok is the Korean traditional dress. It expresses the spirit of Korean, and displays our traditional styles and grace well. The most representative three things of Hanbok worn in winter are Beoseon, Nambawi, and leather-Jeogori. Beoseon (in winter) is Korean traditional socks with thickly padded cotton. The Nambawi is one of the oldest traditional winter hats in Korea and was used by both men and women. And leather-Jeogori is a Korean fur-lined short coat for winter called God-Jeogori.

The Korean winterization culture has attracted foreigner¡¯s attention since their first introduction. One of the things which foreigners want to experience is the Gimjang. Also, they mostly try to find accommodations with Ondol. After staying at a room heated with Ondol, they say it feels very warm and it is such an incredible thing. They wish they could bring the Ondol system to their home country.
