Interviews with the editors of CWNU: Campus Journal

Q. Briefly introduce yourself and your role in this department to the readers of ‘The Campus Journal’.

Lee: Hello readers of ‘The Campus Journal’. I am a junior in the Department of Special Education and starting from this year, I will be in charge of ‘The Campus Journal’ as an editor. It is already the third year working here as a reporter for our university. From now on, I will lead ‘The Campus Journal’ for a year while pursuing 3 big goals. The first one is to make the atmosphere of our team like a family. The second is to extend our articles from offline to online so that the readers can have a better chance to get in touch with us. Lastly, I would like our newspaper to be like a reference book to foreign students in our campus for useful information.

Q: What exactly does ‘The Campus Journal’ do and what’s the main role of the department?

Lee: All the reporters come up with the items and select the articles that they want to write in the paper during the meeting. Every reporter has an important role to run the department such as giving feedback, uploading articles on the website and distributing newspapers around the campus. The biggest meaning of ‘The Campus Journal’ is that it provides English information to CWNU students. In this age of diversity, we offer content that is available not only to Korean students, but also to international students of our university. We also focus on considering how related the article is to CWNU students. It is important to write exciting articles, but we are avoiding topics that are too far from CWNU.

Q: What do you think needs to be improved in the aspect of your role as editor?

Lee: I often write articles related to student councils or organizations of our university, but some student councils or agencies are not that cooperative. Furthermore, the budget of the entire press is decided each year before the editor is changed. Therefore, whenever the new editor tries to do something properly, we face budget problems which makes it difficult for us to proceed as planned. Clear guidelines of the budget should be notified to the editors before starting the semester.

Q: Is there anything you want to improve when comparing this year to last year?
Lee: So far, we have been focusing on the activities of publishing paper-oriented newspapers. So this year's motto is to expand it online. We plan to promote our newspaper through Instagram and Facebook. In addition, we plan to improve from the monotonous design so as to attract students from CWNU.

Q: Final words to your readers?
Lee: I have learned a lot in ‘The Campus Journal’. I would like our students to challenge and learn through various activities rather than just attending school. We are just too young to do nothing!
