The old weight room in Dormitory 3

There are four weight rooms in our university located in the gym, Dongbaekgwan, and in the basements of Dormitory 3 and 7. However, the student weight rooms are far from being of satisfactory quality.

Seung-hee, Lee, who entered university in 2014 majoring in Electricity and Electronic Engineering said, “Our school has four weight rooms but what students actually use are the ones in the dormitory basements. In addition, the one in Dormitory 3 is too old, and only some of the students can use the one in Dormitory 7, so there are a lot of students who can’t exercise even if they want to… there should be improvements in the weight rooms and there should be more around the campus.”

Students can’t use the E-weight room in Dongbaekgwan since it is ‘only for teachers’. The ‘BTL Dormitory weight room’ was built with private sector investment, so only the students who reside in Dormitory 7 can use it for free. If those who don’t reside there want to use the weight room, they have to pay an 8,000-won deposit and get a card before using it. However, the number of its users is limited to only 100, so the situation is not satisfactory.
The weight room in the basement of Dormitory 3 has no restrictions for use, but access to it is poor and the minimal amount of sports equipment there is too old. Especially, the treadmill is in such disrepair that it doesn’t work properly as it suddenly shuts off, and the cycle doesn’t even have a saddle. Since it is located under the ground level, it is badly ventilated and the equipment is rusty. Because of its poor state, only a few students use it.
Some students use the weight room in Dongbaekgwan, which is only for teachers, because of the deteriorated state of the equipment they had access to, and it became an issue.

Hae-bong Jung of General Affairs said, “The weight room in Dongbaekgwan is temporarily run and the equipment is rented at the request of the teachers and school staff. To open it to students, there should be additional manpower, which leads to more budget use. So, despite the restricted student access, some of the students often gain access to the room and exercise there.” There is also a controversy over fairness. On principle, only professors and school staff can use it, but some raise doubts saying that Physical Education major students are allowed to use it since the work-study students in charge of access to it are the same major, allowing their fellow classmates i

Meanwhile, these issues could be solved after the weight room is built in the empty lot next to the social sciences building at the end of this year. Hae-bong Jung said, “The university is working on building an additional weight room, and after the completion of it, its test operation will be conducted to see its use rate, then it will be contracted out to a private corporation and managed by it.” After the contracting-out, it will be run as a paid-for facility, and not only those in school but also locals from the community can use it. People in school can use it at a lower price and the profits will be used to maintain and repair the facilities.
