지난 호에서 “투자(investment)" 문제와 관련된 표현을 익혔는데, 이번 호도 이 주제를 계속 이어 이번 호에는 투자의 다양화(diversify)와 관련된 표현들을 익혀보자. 힘들게 모은 현금을 투자 할 경우, 다양한 곳에 분산 투자하는 것이 얼마나 중요한가 하는 문제는 아무리 강조해도 지나치지 않을 것이다. 다음의 대화문에서도 분산투자의 중요성이 강조되어 있다.

Kayla: I am so depressed these days.
(전 요즘 너무 우울해요.)
Steve: Why? What's wrong?
(왜? 무슨 일이야?)
Kayla: It took my husband five years of hard work at Intel to save lots of money.
(내 남편이 Intel에서 정말 열심히 오랜 기간 일해서 나름 돈을 모았어.)
Steve: I understand, but many people do the same thing and work hard.
(그래. 다른 람들도 그래.)
Kayla: I know. However, we made a very bad decision.
(그렇지. 그런데, 우린 잘못 생각했어.)
Steve: Uh-oh. What was it?
(어? 왜?)
Kayla: We used all our money and invested in an apartment in New York. Now the prices in Manhattan have dropped and we lost so much of our savings.
(우린 우리가 가진 돈 모두 뉴욕의 아파트에 투자했어. 그런데, 맨하탄의 아파트 가격이 폭락을 해, 저축한 돈을 상당히 손해봤어.)
Steve: Yes. I see. It would have been safer if you had diversified your investments. You should have put your money in different areas.
(그래. 투자를 다양화 했더라면 더 안전했을 텐데. 네가 가진 돈을 여러 다른 분야에 투자했어야 했어.)

결국 투자의 가장 기본 규칙(cardinal rule)은 경기가 활성화(buliish) 되더라도 절대 자산을 한 곳에 집중투자(put all your eggs in one basket) 하지 말라는 것이다.

(a) The cardinal rule of economics is when demand increases then so do prices.
(경제의 기본 규칙은 수요가 증가하면 그만큼 가격도 상승한다는 것이다.)
(b) Years ago the economy was bearish, but now it seems bullish.
(수년전에는 경제가 불황이었지만, 지금은 호황이다.)
(c) I buy many different stocks so I do not put all my eggs in one basket.
(난 서로 다른 주식을 샀기 때문에, 한 곳에 집중투자를 하지는 않는다.)
