이번 호에서는 기업의 고객서비스(Customer Service)를 화두로 삼고자한다. 판매하고자 하는 제품의 질이나 가격, 혹은 가게의 경우 가게의 위치와 같은 사업의 성패를 좌지우지하는 요인 들 중 단연 가장 중요한 것은 “고객만족(customer satisfaction)” 혹은 “고객서비스(customer service)”이다. “고객서비스”를 어떻게 실현하느냐에 따라 업계에서 두각을 나타낼 수(a cut above the rest) 있기도 하고 나락(downfall)을 겪게 될 수도 있기 때문이다. 다음 표현들을 익히면서 “고객서비스”의 중요성을 새겨보자.

(a) The manager was unfair to women and that caused his downfall.
(부장은 여성들을 부당하게 대했고 그 때문에 그는 망했어.)
* downfall: loss of success, failure
(b) High quality goods make the company a cut above the rest.
(고품질의 제품 덕에 그 회사는 업계에서 두각을 나타내고 있어.)
* a cut above the rest: Better than average, better than the rest
(c) A: When buying something, I really love being treated in
a very special way by a company.
(물건을 구매할 경우, 난 회사 측으로부터 특별한 대접을
받는 게 정말 좋아.)
B: Cathy, I know what you mean and I can not agree with you more.
(캐시, 무슨 말인지 알겠어. 나도 전적으로 동감이야.)
A: Yes, when I go into a shop I like when a staff member
politely opens the door and offers to help me.
(그래, 가게에 들어설 때 난 직원들이 공손하게
문을 열어주고 도와주겠다고 할 때가 좋아.)
B: Absolutely. I totally agree and think this customer service
is so important. These types of services can bring more customers
and higher profits.
(물론이지. 전적으로 동의해. 이런 고객서비스는 정말 중요해.
왜냐하면, 이것들이 더 많은 고객을 유치시켜주고 더 높은 이윤을
창출하거든.)
