Recently, many crimes are increasing like ¡®Cat-mom case¡¯, and ¡®Busan Seomyeon disappearance case¡¯. Installing CCTV is necessary for preventing the crime and arresting the criminals. However, there are also other opinions that installing CCTV invades one¡¯s privacy. CCTV¡¯s right function and adverse effect, which do we have to focus on? We did an investigation to figure out the awareness of installation of CCTV with CWNU students.
The first question was: ¡®When you found the place where CCTVs are not installed, do you hope to install them?¡¯ 87 students (42%) said ¡®probably¡¯ and 45 of them (21%) said ¡®definitely¡¯. That is, over half of students think they want to install CCTVs when they found the place where CCTVs are not installed.
The second question was: ¡®Do you think installing CCTVs are helpful for preventing crime?¡¯ 57 students (27%) answered ¡®definitely¡¯ and 105 students (50%) answered ¡®probably¡¯ so total 77.1% of students agree about the prevention of crime effect of CCTVs.
The third question was: ¡®Do you think installing CCTVs invades your privacy?¡¯ No one answered ¡®definitely not¡¯ and ¡®probably¡¯ and ¡®not sure¡¯ account for same percentage (36%). There are many students who say ¡®probably not¡¯ (15%) but about half of students (49%) say ¡®definitely¡¯ and ¡®probably¡¯.
The last question was: ¡®Which one is more important between preventing crime and protection of privacy?¡¯ 186 students (89%) said ¡®prevention crime is more important¡¯ and only 24 of students (11%) said ¡®protection of privacy is more important.¡¯
Many students replied that installing CCTV is helpful for preventing crime, and also invades their privacy. Between the importance of prevention crime and protection privacy, many students replied crime prevention is more important. Consequently, there¡¯s some adverse effect, however, installing CCTV¡¯s benefit is bigger. Of course we don¡¯t have to invade one¡¯s privacy, but there are so many benefits with CCTV, and it is doing a huge role with protecting crime and arresting criminals, so we have to keep a good balance.
