CWNU Signs MOA with TU in Nepal

CWNU began the Leading University Project for International Cooperation by signing an MOA with Thribhuvan National University (TU) in Nepal on October 8. CWNU was selected by the Ministry of Education and the National Research Foundation of Korea to participate in the program to foster and support the Leading University Project for International Cooperation in July. Faculty including Lee Chan–gyu, the president of CWNU, Jeon Hyung-jun, the head of international affairs, and Hira Bahadur Maharjan, the vice president of TU, attended the signing ceremony.

The Leading University Project for International Cooperation is a business that supports universities in developing countries by setting up or remodeling necessary departments, and providing local community development programs. Four selected universities, including Inje University and POSTECH, have participated since 2012. This year, a total of 14 universities applied, but only CWNU and Cheju Halla University were selected. CWNU will receive 200 million won over four years.

CWNU will form a consortium with Chinju National University of Education and establish a graduate school for special education at TU starting in January. CWNU will also provide various programs, such as a special education teacher-training course, after-school activities for children, and disability awareness training. To maximize the effect of this business, CWNU will cultivate six scholars supported by the government¡¯s GKS (Global Korea Scholarship) program. They will receive tuition fees and living expenses in order to take graduate school courses, and then return to TU as professors. This is expected to help sustainable development in Nepal, and be the foundation of exchange and cooperation between the two countries.

President Lee Chan-gyu said, ¡°CWNU have managed the ODA (Official Development Assistance) project for three years. Therefore, the MOA is the starting point to see the results. This kind of global cooperation program will contribute to national development in the long term. ¡°

¡°Through this program, we expect Korean-style development assistance in education to develop. The Ministry of Education will consistently support selected universities by doing an interim report, and providing internal and external consulting activities,¡± said a ministry official.
