Youth Over Flower: Exchange Student

Have you ever watched TvN ? It¡¯s a variety program that records free trips in other countries along with star entertainers. On their way to find a famous spot or well known restaurant, they face a number of cultural and language difficulties; nevertheless, their expressions and faces give the impression that they are excited. For example, the people were frightened when they found a guinea pig dish in a restaurant and they cried watching the sun set. A guest said at the end, ¡°Time is so precious.¡±

Lots of college students want to visit other countries and experience different foods, make new friends, and appreciate beautiful scenery, while studying different languages at the same time. Moreover, students who have been there already advise that everyone should experience this. CWNU provides volunteers with such great programs that every student can enjoy the overseas lifestyle and study their majors. Recently, CWNU made an agreement with the exchange student program at De La Salle University in The Philippines, and promised the further exchange with several Mongolian and Japanese universities as well.

Universities Students Can Go To

The CWNU International Affairs Department carries out the exchange student program twice a year. In the first session the student can apply to the Harbin Institute of Technology (China/3people), Qingdao University of Science and Technology (China/3), Yanbia University (China/3), Northeast Normal University (China/3), Soka University (Japan/2), Tohoku University (Japan/2). In the second session students can apply to Trinity University (Ireland/2people), Pacific National University (Russia/3), Kyushu Institute of Technology (Japan/1), Sandong University (China/3), Sandong University, Weihai (China/4), the University of Science and Technology Beijing (China/3).

In addittion, students can also study at Warsaw University of Technology (Poland/1~3people), and Nagasaki University(Japan/1~3) when the universities allow.

Students can study any kind of major at every university except Pacific National University, Soka University and, Sandong University Weihai and unfortunately, only the College of Social Science and Commercial students can apply to Trinity University. Also, Nagasaki University is exclusively for art majors, and Sandong University for Chinese majors.

How To Prepare

Every applicant should have a GPA average of 3.0 or higher to apply and have to study for more than one semester when returning to CWNU. To make sure students can communicate and understand the lectures easily, there is a language score applicants should attain. Students need at least HSK level 4 to go universities in China, JPT score 600 to go universities in Japan, and other universities in European countries such Poland and Russia require a TOEIC score higher than 600 or Teps 502. Exceptionally, Trinity University accepts a TOFEL score over 80. Each exchange student is selected by their scholar score (100points), language score (50) and study plan and interview (50).

Benefit

If selected to become an exchange student, tuition fees frozen. The student only needs to register at CWNU for the next semester. Some universities offer dormitory and meal expenses. Air fare is not provided.

Interview exchange student

Jang Mi Seon, International Relations (13), is now studying at Pacific National University in Russia as an exchange student. I interviewed her via email.

Q. Congratulations! What made you choose to go Russia?

Jang: First of all, thank you. I am so glad that I can share my experience. I am interested in foreign languages as I majored Chinese at high school and also enjoy studying English. Above all, I love traveling so much that I wanted to experience a new country and language, so I chose Russia. I believed that if I study Russian here, I would understand the relationship between Asian countries.

Q How did you prepare for the language test?

Jang: I was worried when I heard the language score is a vital part in the selection process since my Russian was poor. I handed in my English and Chinese test scores and emphasized my passion for learning languages. In the Interview, I was asked how I would study in Russia, and I explained the reasons why I wanted to go and promised to take basic Russian classes until I left Korea. Looking back, taking Russian classes was a very good decision because without studying Russian beforehand, I would not communicate with others like now.

Q How have you changed during the program?

Jang: I realize things now that I didn¡¯t appreciate when I was living in Korea. Interestingly, I understand more about my country. This is because there were lots of chances to explain my own culture.

I can now understand the overseas students on CWNU campus as I am in the same position. I have met many wonderful friends that helps me to adjust to a new place, sharing different knowledge and culture. I hope CWNU students assist overseas students as well.

In Khabarovsk, where I live, there are lots of Chinese people so I study Chinese too, whenever I can. In a year, I will become a professional student who can help with the relationship between Russia, China, and Korea. I want to be an expert in this field.

Q Is there anything you should have prepared more?

Jang: Actually, no. It would have been much better if I had studied Russian more prior to coming here. However, information about Russia was difficult to find on the internet, even though I wanted to study a lot about Russia and its culture. Only some articles were available

Q. What are three thing students should get ready?

Jang: It is necessary for any student to study basic Russian at least, but, confidence is more important because nobody gives you a hand so the student should be independent. Throughout the time I have been here, I have noticed that the more independent students have achieved more. It¡¯s also important to be welcoming and accepting of other people. You can have great memories only when you are friendly with others. Last but not least, students need do some thorough research of the place they are visiting because the temperature and climate might be extremely different from Korea's just like here.

Q. Tell students what you'd like to.

Jang: Whereas every day is full of excitement the exchange student program is not a fun vacation. In this school, for instance, every student goes to school even on Saturday. There is lots of work to do in each lecture, not to mention the Russian language problem. However, even though it is a challenge, I am really enjoying it being a part of my life. I really can recommend the exchange student program to anybody. I know some people are afraid of the lifestyle in different countries but it is a chance to improve your view of the world, and, guess what, there are so many handsome guys here!
