Cars Passing Through CWNU Must Pay 1000 Won

Every car passing through the campus will have to pay a 1000\ ¡°safety charge¡± from July 1st. On January 10th, the CWNU entrance from Rte 25 was opened. As a result, the distance to CWNU from Rte 25 was shortened by at least 15 minutes. Most of the cars, however, do not have business at the university, but cross the campus to get to their destinations.

The cars pose dangers to the students on campus. This is mainly because the long entrance road makes allows cars to go fast. The university carefully considered how to safeguard students, and utilize the road at the same time.

On May 9th, CWNU officially announced the safety charge as ¡°an inevitable decision to protect students and faculty," appealing to people to understand the fee. A staff member said, "More than ten thousand students study at CWNU. To maintain safety, we would prefer people detour the campus. However, we will listen to other ideas by the people.¡±

The safety charge is 1000\ for any car that passes one of four gates, including the main gate. This policy is designed to reduce the number of cars that pass through the university. On average, sixty thousand cars a month traverse the campus at 70km/h, increasing the possibility of accidents on campus. The speed limit on campus is 30km/h. In fact, an accident has already occurred at the intersection in front of the Social Sciences College. Only university employees who use the same gate they come in through are exempt from the charge.

To further prevent accidents, the university established a ¡®Traffic Security Committee¡¯ this year to deal with traffic matters. Accordingly, more traffic lights at intersections and speed bumps were installed. Additional speed bumps will be built at the intersection in front of the Economic Business College, and at the three-way intersection in front of the International Exchange Center.

A Social Sciences student, Lee Seoung-hyoen, said, "After the entrance road was opened, the number of cars on the campus drastically increased. Students worry not only about car accidents, but about street noise and exhaust. I think the university's plan is reasonable as the school is supposed to protect the students."

Furthermore, some point out that the debate is nonsense because drivers can go downtown by going through Changwon Station. As this issue is very sensitive, both drivers and students must be careful to prevent accidents on campus.

Meanwhile, a number of universities, including Kyungpook National University, Kangwon National University, and Chonbuk National University, are already enforcing similar safety charges.
