SEWOL makes a Sea of Tears all over the World

A tragic accident happened in South Korea on April 16th. It made people feel sad all over the world. Memorial ceremonies are held everywhere. 132,875 people gathered in the Ansan group memorial altar in 5 days. People are conducting the ¡°yellow ribbon¡± campaign for the victims. The CWNU student council participates in this too. Yellow ribbons are hanging at the front gate.

About 476 passengers were in the ship. Among the passengers, there were 325 Ansan Dan-won high school students. The departure port was Incheon, and the destination was Jeju Island. The high school students were on a school trip. The estimated time of departure of the ship was at 6:30am on 15th April, but it was delayed until 9:00am because of mist. The estimated time of arrival was at 10:30am on 16th April.

On the 16th, the ship started to break down in the Jindo Sea around 8:30a.m. It was listing 30 to 40 degrees. The accident was reported to Jeju marine transportation control center and maritime polices at 8:50a.m. One theory surrounding the cause of the accident is the amount of ballaster water in the ship. The purpose of the ballaster water is to balance the ship. Before the departure, according to speculation, the ballaster water was thrown away to carry more freight. When ships sink, the bottom should touch the sea bed first. But this time, the ship tilted and capsized. Some people suggest that only 987 tons of freight could be taken aboard on the ship, but, again, some evidence suggests that, there were 3,608 tons of freight.

Another theory, is that the ship hit a rock, because of the crew wanted to make up lost time they changed the route of the ship.

The number of deaths is 205, and the death toll is expected to increase. The number of missing people is around 97 and there are only 174 confirmed survivors. 75 of them are Ansan Dan-won high school students. The 15 crew men responsible for navigating the ship survived the accident and are expected to receive a criminal penalty.

One of the crews Park Ji-young, handed life jackets to students to the end and said to people, ¡°You go first, and the crew will go last¡± A teacher named Choi Hye-jeong died rescuing her students. Kim Hong-kyong made a rope with curtains, and rescued the more than 10 passengers and then he was rescued. He said, ¡°I am sad I couldn¡¯t rescue more students.¡±

This is a terrible tragic event that has cost the lives of many innocent people. All we can do is pray for the victims and their families and wish that they rest in peace.
