K. Barry Sharpless won the 2001 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Knowles & Noyori. He was born in America in 1941 and received a doctorate degree from Stanford University. He is a chair-professor at Scrippes Research Institute. He made Glicidol for use as medicine for high blood pressure and heart disease.
¡°Don¡¯t be afraid of failure¡±
He explained that creative thinking arises when there is no fear. He said, ¡°Failure is fine. You should analyze the cause of failure and climb over the wall. You can achieve greatness.¡± Prof. Sharpless emphasized ¡°discovery¡± and ¡°rediscovery¡± to the young students at the lecture.
There was time for questions after the lecture. A student asked why Korea didn¡¯t have a Nobel Prize winner outside of a Nobel Prize for peace. He said, ¡°Maybe today¡¯s generation of Koreans will win a Nobel Prize.¡±
Prof. Shin Dong-su of the Dept. of Chemistry said, ¡°A lecture by a Nobel Prize winner is very unusual for a local university. We should create an atmosphere and foundation needed to become the ¡®Mecca of research in science education
