Many automobiles made by university students compete with others for a prize in Yeungnam University. Fourteen students who belong to AK team in a department of mechanical engineering of CNU made a good showing at “2009 World University student Self-made Automobile Contest”, so they redounded school’s honor.

In 1996, Yeungnam University holds “World University student Self-made Automobile Contest” for the first time in S. Korea. And Yeungnam University was authorized by SAE(Society of Automotive Engineers) in 2001.

In July 9th to 11th, about two thousand students in 64 teams and 54 universities participated in the contest held at Yeungnam University. The self-made and off-road automobile with 125cc engine reaches the speed of 80~90km/h. The test was divided into three parts : static test, dynamic test and endurance race. The static test consists of design, repair with ease and mass productivity. The dynamic test consists of motive power, acceleration force, maximum speed and braking ower. The participating teams should run 4km off-road track during 3 hours and 30 minutes.
AK team received three awards; a motive power award, a excellent design report award and a Henkel Technical Design Award, so attracted public attention.

Moon Seong-Joon, a leader of team, said that “I’d like to express my heartfelt thanks to two thesis director, Kim Soo-Tae (Department of Mechanical Engineering), Yoon Geon-Sik (Department of Shipbuilding Engineering) and co-worker who went through all sorts of troubles with me. We were a champion at last contest. Unfortunately, we failed to catch the championship this time. We are going to supplement the weaknesses of the team and endeavor in order to redound and school’s honor.” They received a testimonial from a resident of Yeungnam University, two memorial tablet and a trophy.
