The students of the Dept. of Special Education held the 'Disabled Experience Event' on April 17th to commemorate the Disabled People's Day on April 20th.
The event was held at Jungwoo shopping district from 10:00am to 4:00pm, with the participation of citizens and of students of the Dept. of Special Education. This was the 11th event, and the aim was to provide an opprtunity to understand the difficulties of the disabled and change to positive visions through actual experience.
The event included experience of visual perception, poor visual experience, experience with visual impairments, sensory experience and an art exhibition of disabled people and sign language performance of the Dept. of Special Education students. The sign language performance was accompanied by the song 'Like the first time, like that time' Participants in the event were varied, from kindergarteners to senior citizens. However, there were more students mainly because young people crowded the street.
A student after riding the wheelchair said "When a friend was riding a wheelchair, it looked interesting, but my arm hurt when I had the experience. And I am angry at people who did not get out of the way. After having this experience, I feel difthe ficulty of disabled people and I emphatize more with disabled people." The event was an opportunity for the students who usually have negative opinions to change the way they think about disabled people.
